The City of Port Orange Public Utilities Department, which serves a large portion of the City of Daytona Beach Shores, will perform annual flushing and maintenance activities on the water distribution system beginning Monday, Aug. 8.
This will involve changing the disinfectant from the chloramines presently used to free chlorine. Over a period of six weeks, the free chlorine residual will move out into the distribution system while city staff conducts a thorough flushing of all the water mains.
This is done annually to maintain the water distribution system. During this time, the water continues to be of the highest quality and completely safe to drink. However, with the change in disinfectant, some customers may notice a slight difference in the taste of the water. The maintenance and flushing activities will be completed on Monday, Sept. 19, at which time we will return to chloramines.
Areas affected by this are the greater Port Orange water distribution system, Harbor Oaks, Allendale, Ponce Inlet, and Daytona Beach Shores from Thames Avenue south to the southern city limits.
