Bethune-Cookman University recently issued the following announcement.

A pair of top five finishes by Carlin Berryhill highlighted the return of Bethune-Cookman Track and Field last weekend at the Gamecock Indoor Opener hosted by the University of South Carolina.

Berryhill, the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference cross country champion, finished fourth in the 800 (1:55.97) and fifth in the 3000 (8:43.09) as the Wildcats competed for the first time since the indoor season of 2020.

“He was a little nervous after being out for a year, but after the second or third lap, he was the same old guy, said B-CU Head Coach Donald Cooper. “He showed a lot of leadership this weekend.

“It felt good being back out in competition, “Cooper added. “We had some freshman advance to finals and get some experience. They got to see the reality of college track.”

Tavis Wilson qualified for the 60-meter dash and finished seventh in 6.99 seconds. David Richards also qualified for his event final, the 60 hurdles and posted a time of 8.42 seconds to finish eighth.

Christian Taylor was eighth in the 400 (50.97).

In field events, Guy Bond was fourth in the high jump (1.98 meters) and Matthew Williams eighth in the triple jump (12.9 meters).

Both 4X400 Relay teams took two top fives – the squad of Christian Taylor, Kristopher Brown, Christian Washington and David Richards finished fourth in 3:30.45 while Isaiah Johnson, Marvens Milhomme, Michael Hopkins and Isaiah Davis were fifth in 3:34.69.

On the women’s side, Thea Shaw picked up a couple of seventh place finishes in the high jump (1.60 meters) and with the 4X400 meter relay team of Alyssa Williams, Kaiel Kimble and Indya Campbell.

“Thea was active and excited to be back in the swing of things,” Cooper said “Definitely looking forward to her taking off and having a great season.”

Sanaa Marlin was seventh in the triple jump (10.39 meters) while Alysa Whetro was eighth in the high jump (1.55 meters).   

B-CU competes this weekend in Birmingham, Ala. At the Samford Invite and the KMS Invite.

“Excited about this weekend and keep the train rolling getting some experience for this very young group,” Cooper said.
