Bethune-Cookman University announced on April 27 that Sofia Vallejos-Coleman and Michael Rodriguez have been named Wildcats of the Week for April 20-26.
The award recognizes one male and one female student-athlete each week who have excelled in competition, academics, and community involvement. Vallejos-Coleman made two appearances in her final weekend at Sunnyland Park, including her only complete game of the season where she allowed six hits, one run, and one walk. She has played a key role as a pitcher for the softball team throughout the season.
Rodriguez has become an important player for the baseball team this year. After making only 29 starts last season, he took over right field with more than 30 starts so far this year. In April alone, he collected 25 hits, drove in 14 runs, and earned 10 walks. Before facing UCF Midweek, Rodriguez had a hitting streak that lasted twelve games dating back to March.
Each week during the academic year, Bethune-Cookman’s Office of Athletic Communications selects recipients for this honor from across all sports teams. The Wildcats of the Week award aims to highlight student-athletes who represent what is described as “the Championship Culture of Wildcat Athletics.” Past honorees have included athletes from softball, baseball, track & field, tennis, women’s golf, men’s basketball, football, volleyball and cross country.
The recognition continues through each athletic season as new student-athletes are highlighted weekly for their performances both on and off their respective fields.
