Bethune-Cookman University held the Jackson State offense to just two runs during a doubleheader sweep on April 11 at Sunnyland Park, securing their fourth series victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The Wildcats’ strong pitching and timely hitting proved decisive as they won both games, improving their conference record. The wins are significant for Bethune-Cookman, helping them build momentum in SWAC competition.
In the first game, both teams struggled offensively until the fifth inning when Jackson State took a brief lead. Bethune-Cookman responded with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by Kween Tauala’s two-RBI single and Jessica Alaan’s run-scoring hit. Sofia Coleman earned her fourth win of the season after allowing just one run over six and two-thirds innings. Mia Gonzalez closed out the game to secure the 4-1 victory.
The second game saw another strong defensive effort from Bethune-Cookman. After escaping early threats from Jackson State, the Wildcats broke open the scoring with a six-run third inning that included a bases-clearing double by Jasmine Manebo. Manebo added her first home run of the season later in the game as Bethune-Cookman won 8-1.
Jackson State had several opportunities but was unable to capitalize due to base-running mistakes and key outs recorded by Wildcat pitchers Mia Gonzalez and Aimi Tohara-Yshiki.
Looking ahead, Bethune-Cookman will travel to Alabama for a weekend series against Alabama State University. The teams previously met earlier this season with Bethune-Cookman sweeping that series as well.
