Bethune-Cookman University’s baseball team clinched a series victory against the Southern Jaguars by winning both games of a doubleheader on April 4 at Wesley Burrow Stadium in New Orleans.
The Wildcats’ offense produced a total of 18 runs across the two games. In the first game, Bethune-Cookman took an early lead after scoring on an error and extended their advantage with home runs from Andrey Martinez and Christopher Watson. Jose Fernandez added to the tally with a two-RBI single, helping the Wildcats build a 5-0 lead by the fifth inning. Southern responded in later innings but was unable to close the gap, as Justin Morales pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure a 6-3 win for Bethune-Cookman. Edwin Sanchez earned his sixth win of the season after pitching seven innings and allowing just one run.
In game two, Bethune-Cookman continued their strong performance by scoring six runs in the first three innings. Erick Almonte contributed with sacrifice flies, while Jeter Polledo and Christopher Watson each recorded RBI doubles. The Wildcats added more runs in subsequent innings, making it difficult for Southern to recover despite late efforts that made the final score 12-7.
Watson finished with three RBI and hit his first home run of the season during Saturday’s games. Michael Rodriguez recorded four hits including two doubles, while Pablo Torres delivered two scoreless innings and has not allowed a run in his last ten-plus innings pitched.
With these wins, Bethune-Cookman’s record improved to 22-10 overall and 10-2 in conference play. The team will remain in Louisiana for their next matchup against LSU Tigers of the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
