Bethune-Cookman University’s women’s basketball team will travel to Alabama this week for two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) games. The Wildcats, currently 3-17 overall and 1-6 in conference play, are set to face Alabama A&M on Thursday, January 29 at the AAMU Event Center in Huntsville. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be available to watch on SWAC TV.
The Wildcats will then head to Montgomery to play Alabama State on Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. ET at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. This matchup can be viewed on the Hornets Sports Network.
In their most recent outing, Bethune-Cookman fell short against Jackson State. Jackson State took an early lead with an 18-2 run in the first quarter and maintained control by outrebounding the Wildcats and converting more shot attempts. Bethune-Cookman struggled offensively in the opening half but improved shooting accuracy in the third quarter narrowed the gap. Madison Holden led the Wildcats with a total of 20 points, helping her team bring the score within five points heading into the fourth quarter. Despite closing in during the final period, Bethune-Cookman could not overcome Jackson State’s defense.
Alabama A&M enters Thursday’s contest with a record of 10-9 and is riding a six-game winning streak. The Bulldogs remain undefeated at home against SWAC opponents and recently secured an 18-point win over Texas Southern. Kalia Walker leads Alabama A&M in scoring with an average of 13.6 points per game and has made 24 three-pointers this season. In her last game, Walker contributed 19 points while shooting efficiently from both the field and free-throw line. Alabama A&M currently holds opponents to just under 60 points per game, ranking as the top defensive team in the SWAC.
Alabama State stands at 7-11 overall with a conference record of 4-3. The Hornets have earned back-to-back road wins but have yet to secure a SWAC home victory this season. Shamaya Reid leads Alabama State’s offense with an average of 8.4 points per game and has scored double digits in four of seven conference games so far.
Historically, Alabama A&M holds an advantage over Bethune-Cookman, winning eight out of eleven previous matchups and currently enjoying a five-game winning streak against them. Against Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman trails slightly in their all-time series (5-6), though they have won their last three meetings.
