The New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex & Paws Park will close over Easter weekend, April 7-9, for control of parasitic nematodes and mole crickets. No activities are scheduled and organizations that use the complex regularly have been notified.
Nematodes are microscopic worms that live in the soil. While there are many kinds that are beneficial, feeding on fungi, bacteria, and other organisms, some harmful nematodes feed on plants. These plant-parasitic nematodes damage root systems and reduce a plant’s ability to get water and nutrients from the soil.
Invasive mole crickets are also a serious plant pest for many Floridians. These insects can do major damage to any species of turf grass, as well as to pastures, forage crops, and vegetables.
