Bethune-Cookman shortstop Erick Almonte was named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Week, the conference announced on Apr. 15 from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
The recognition marks Almonte’s first weekly award this season and is the ninth such honor for Bethune-Cookman University as a team during this campaign.
Almonte delivered a strong performance for the Wildcats, helping them upset defending national champions and nationally ranked #24 Louisiana State University. He also contributed to a weekend series win at Mississippi Valley State. Over four games, Almonte tallied eight hits in 15 at-bats, including two doubles and his first two home runs of the season—one being a grand slam. He drove in ten runs, walked twice, and scored four times.
The Wildcats are aiming to maintain their momentum following another victory over a ranked opponent on Tuesday. Their next matchup is against Alabama A&M Bulldogs this weekend at Sliwa Stadium, starting Friday at 7 p.m.
