CITY OF NEW SMYRNA BEACH: Ribbon cutting celebration for new Alonzo "Babe" James Community Center splash pad on Oct. 23-

City of New Smyrna Beach issued the following announcement.

Join us on Friday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. when the City of New Smyrna Beach will host a ribbon cutting celebration to commemorate completion of a new splash park at the Alonzo “Babe” James Community Center at 201 N. Myrtle Ave.

Funded in part by a $213,650 Volusia ECHO program grant, the splash pad uses nozzles and other devices to spray water and drains to ensure there is little or no standing water, allowing park-goers to keep cool while eliminating the need for lifeguards. Other added amenities include two restrooms, a changing room, outdoor shower, five picnic tables, and improved landscaping, all contained within a newly erected fence.

Following remarks by city and county leaders and a ceremonial ribbon cutting, children from the center’s after-school program will be able to enjoy the new gear under the watchful eye of Leisure Services Department staff for safety and compliance with social distancing guidelines.

The event marks the culmination of a project that solicited resident ideas for the splash pad’s final design and layout both online and at a public meeting hosted last year on June 12. The City Commission then gave final approval to move forward on Jan. 14 this year and followed up with a groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 24.

“Parks and their amenities bring people and community together. Splash pads allow everyone to enjoy a safe and interactive aquatic experience,” said Leisure Services Director David Ray. “Along with our after-school program and new upcoming basketball leagues, this will be another public gathering spot for people to recreate together as a community.”
