City Of Holly Hill issued the following announcement on July 13.

Holly Hill funded the construction of a municipal building, in part with laborers supplied by the WPA. The town approved the project in 1936 and hired popular Daytona Beach architect Alan J. MacDonough to design the building. The town’s officials approved MacDonough’s plans for the coquina building in November 1939 and carpenter George E. Somers was assigned superintendent of construction. Somers secured the native rock from a quarry north of Ormond Beach and laid the cornerstone in 1940. WPA laborers completed the project at a cost of $150,000 and the town dedicated the building on September 7, 1942.

The building faced Ridgewood Avenue while the ground floor of the building faced Daytona Avenue and housed the fire and police departments. The auditorium and gymnasium seated 1,000. It was converted to much needed office space in the mid 1990’s. Located at 1065 Ridgewood Avenue, the municipal building is the only resource in Holly Hill listed in the National Register of Historic Places. During the renovations carpet and laminate flooring covered the gymnasium's basketball court.

Recently, there was a need to replace the carpet in the city commission chambers. Prior to the start of the carpet replacement, city staff noticed the old gym floor below and thought it would be a good idea to refinish the floor and bring back the historic gymnasium floor once played upon by many residents of Holly Hill and Volusia County. With the support of the Mayor and Commissioners, the floor was refinished with a city seal centered at the podium.

The attached photos show the original  floor and the recently refinished floor.
