City of New Smyrna Beach issued the following announcement on Aug. 2.
On April 13, the City Commission voted 5-0 to join the American Flood Coalition, a national nonpartisan, nonprofit alliance of elected officials, civic groups, military leaders, and municipalities advocating for proactive solutions to flooding and sea level rise.
Florida has nearly 1,200 miles of coastline exposed to the effects of flooding and sea level rise, to which homes have lost over $5.4 billion in property value since 2005.
Now, at no cost the City of New Smyrna Beach joins 263 members across 21 states with access to Coalition resources including its networks of leaders that share flooding solutions implemented by communities all over the country, competitive local resilience pilots that promote deeper engagement on flooding and sea level rise, and a platform for advocacy and education.
