Two workshops to design new City Gym mural on Sept. 8 & 22

9

City of New Smyrna Beach recently issued the following announcement.

The City of New Smyrna Beach and Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) will host two collaborative workshops to brainstorm a new mural to be painted on a City Gym exterior wall on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Alonzo "Babe" James Community Center at 201 N. Myrtle Ave. and Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Coronado Civic Center at 150 N. Pine St.

During these workshops, ACA artists will ask participants to share a pattern design that is meaningful to their culture or family heritage. Examples include quilts, family crests, cultural fabric patterns (e.g. African kente, Scottish tartans, Japanese mons, etc.), or a simple design that is representative of their interests.

The mural will be painted in four colors by three artists:

Bethany Bennett is an ACA community artist whose interdisciplinary works question women's equality and their role in society. She is currently a professor at Daytona State College and leads ACA community outreach.

Shyriaka Morris is an ACA community artist and integral part of their ongoing effort to offer unique art-related programming in New Smyrna Beach.

Jake Myers is a student at Savannah College of Art & Design whose Pettis Park skate bowl design (see next included photo) recently captured local media attention. When asked about the project he said, "I absolutely love the idea of this mural. My ancestry is of mixed nationalities and I always wanted to do a mural that has meaning and purpose for the NSB community. By using abstract and bright colors, it will represent different cultures that can live together in harmony without reinforcing stereotypes for these diverse communities. The image of holding hands is a great way to express we are all equal. The entire mural will be designed to lift spirits and renew a sense of togetherness."
