Men’s Soccer Fights Back But Falls To Tars

3

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University issued the following announcement on Oct. 13.

It was a tough loss for the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team on Wednesday night. The Eagles (2-8-1, 1-4-1 Sunshine State Conference) erased a 1-0 deficit but allowed a late goal and fell to Rollins (6-3-2, 3-2-1 SSC).

Embry-Riddle had the first prime opportunity in this match when Amit Libgot pegged a shot off the cross bar in the 25th minute. However, it was the Tars who struck first when Rollins converted on a penalty kick in the 34th minute.

It was only a one-goal deficit into the break for the Eagles. The damage could have been worse had it not been for a spectacular save in the 43rd minute by Embry-Riddle's keeper Jack Crichton. He made a diving stop in a one-on-one situation by deflecting a shot from the right side of the box with his upper body. That block was one of four made by the goaltender in the first half of play.

Playing from behind, the Eagles pressed offensively in the second 45 minutes of play. Three of the first four shots of the half were by Embry-Riddle, one of which was nearly an equalizer when, despite a sharp angle, Eden Bokobza fired about 10 feet away from the net on the left side. The ball sped across the grass but was saved by the legs of the Tars' goalie.

The constant pressure finally paid off in the 67th minute on a play involving a handful of Eagles. Sergio Monteiro threw the ball in to Teddy West, who then kicked it back to Monteiro. Unguarded, he sent a high-arcing pass into the box for Toby Cassidy. Rollins intercepted the ball, but Cassidy blocked the attempted clearance. He then controlled the ball and tapped it to Sandro Henning, who knocked it in for the tying goal.

With time winding down in the second half, both teams appeared to be headed toward extra time until the Tars powered a shot over the goal line for what turned out to be the game-winning score in the 87th minute.

Both Sandro Henning and Amit Libgot registered a team-high three shots on goal while Jack Crichton notched five saves, a season-best for him.

Embry-Riddle has one week off for the final time this season before returning home on Wednesday, Oct. 20, to face No. 10 Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m.
