Women’s Golf Has Three in Top 20 Through First Day of Saint Leo Invitational

9

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University issued the following announcement on Oct. 18.

With two tournaments in two weeks, the Embry-Riddle women's golf team began a packed stretch of play by completing the first two rounds of the Saint Leo Invitational on Monday. The par-72, 6,062-yard course at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club was tough to tame, but the Eagles (318-314=632) found some success and sit in sixth place. On the par-3's, Embry-Riddle recorded the second-lowest average score (3.2) by any team.

Both Reni Jancsik (79-76=155) and Millie Lawson (78-77=155) paced the Eagles through the opening two rounds. Jancsik closed strong with the lowest second-round shot total on the team, which also tied her career best 18-hole score. Over the final five holes, the sophomore tallied one birdie and four pars to climb up into a tie for 17th place.

For Lawson, she recorded her lowest round of the season the second time around the course. Her three birdies on the day tied for the most on the team as she also sits tied for 17th.

Mackenzie Dieter (77-79=156) led the squad through the first round thanks to a strong back nine of one birdie and seven pars. She sits tied for 20th.

Making her season debut, Kelly Harris (84-82=166) is the only rostered Eagle with experience at this course as she competed at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club during the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Championship.  Like most of her teammates, she improved the second time through.

Marybeth McGuire (85-83=168) got in a groove at the end of round one with two birdies in the last three holes. She carried that momentum over into the next round with a two-stroke improvement.

Paula Valdivia (83-77=160) and Brigitte Clements (80-87=167) competed as individuals.

"Lake Jovita is all the golf course you could want," Head Coach Maria Lopez said. "You have to be precise with your clubbing, course management and self-management. We have been in the fight today. I really like our perseverance."

Tampa (598) leads the field with one round left to go. Saint Leo (606) and Flagler (607) are in a close battle for second while Florida Southern (609) and West Georgia (615) round out the top five.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with the third and final round. Tee time is schedule for 9 a.m.
