Who needs snow when you can have sun and sand?

Beach 1000

City of New Smyrna Beach issued the following announcement on Dec. 21.

Who needs snow when you can have sun and sand? To accommodate increased visitors to the beach over the holiday, Volusia County will open all in-season vehicular beach access ramps for use from Dec. 23 to Jan. 2. On Jan. 3, vehicular beach access will revert back to the off-season schedule.

“Mild winter temperatures coupled with an increase of visitors tends to lead to more beachgoers over the holiday season” said Jessica Winterwerp, director of the county’s Coastal Division. “We know that with friends and families visiting, the beach is a popular destination this time of year. As in past years, to ensure convenient beach access for both our residents and visitors, we’ll open additional vehicle access ramps.”

Those who decide to brave the cooler water should swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower. From Nov. 1 to April 30, the beach is open to vehicles from sunrise to sunset, tides permitting. Beach parking is also available at the county’s many off-beach parking lots. And even when ramps are closed to vehicles, access is always open for pedestrians and bicyclists.
