Bethune-Cookman University issued the following announcement on Dec. 22.
Bethune-Cookman's return to softball after a year's absence also returns to a challenging schedule against some of the nation's elite programs.
Four tournaments featuring several 2021 NCAA tournament participants highlight the 48-game schedule for 2022 as the Wildcats settle in to their new home in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
"Our schedule is, purposely, one of the toughest schedules of any HBCU softball program," said B-CU Head Coach Laura Watten. "We have a young, but deep roster, with a solid and balanced mix of newcomers and returners. They have all endured the challenges of the pandemic and stayed committed to our process, on the field and in the classroom. We had a great fall season, and we are excited to attack the challenges we will face in the spring.
B-CU opens its 2022 slate February 11 at the FAU Invitational against Northern Illinois with a field that includes Louisville and Ohio State. The following weekend at the Orlando Spring Games, Monmouth, 2021 NCAA tournament participant Missouri, Maryland, Butler and Stetson are on the five-game slate.
The team's traditional trip to California for the Mary Nutter Classic, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, takes place Feb. 24-26 and includes a matchup with 2021 tournament participant BYU in the opening. This a popular trip with most of the team hailing from the state.
B-CU comes closer to home for its final tournament March 4-6 at Stetson University, then hosts Tennessee State in its home opener on Tuesday, March 8 before starting SWAC play.
The Wildcats will open league play on the road March 11-12 at Jackson State with home series on March 18-19 against Alabama State, April 15-16 against Mississippi Valley State and April 29-30 against Jackson State. The annual showdown with rival Florida A&M continues in the SWAC April 2-3.
The SWAC tournament will be held May 10-14 in Gulfport, Miss.
Home games are at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach.
