City of Orange City recently issued the following announcement.
Explore Orange City’s past through the Fire and Ice tours. Hosted by the Orange City Historic Preservation Board, these tours will showcase two significant events that forever changed the landscape of our past.
March 12, 2022 tours start at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am and 12 pm
Starting location: Wava Hall, 200 N Holly Ave, Orange City
he Fire Tour is an approximately 45 minute (3/4 mile) guided walking tour that focuses on the “burnt district.” See where many of Orange City’s grand homes and businesses were impacted by our town’s worst fire that occurred on March 12, 1909. Echoes of the past may be heard from our historic fire truck as the history of the fire department is revealed along the way. This area includes North Oak, East University and East Graves Avenues.
The Ice Tour is an approximate 1.5 hour (1.25 mile) guided walking tour through the northeast quarter of the historic district. See where historical figures, events, and architectural examples of our past reveal the incredible rise of Orange City’s famed citrus industry. The tour will explore how the “great freeze” of 1895 contributed to its devastating end and the resulting impacts on our community.
