City of New Smyrna Beach recently issued the following announcement.
City commissioners began last night’s regular meeting by proclaiming March 2022 to be American Red Cross Month in the City of New Smyrna Beach, observing a firefighter pinning ceremony, and recognizing community members for their fundraising efforts in support if injured Firefighter Driver/Engineer Jeremy Macklefresh.
“In times of crisis, people in the City of New Smyrna Beach come together to care for one another. This humanitarian spirit is part of the foundation of our community and is exemplified by American Red Cross volunteers and donors,” said Mayor Russ Owen. “I urge all citizens of the City of New Smyrna Beach to reach out and support its humanitarian mission.”
Joining the mayor were two members of the American Red Cross of Florida’s Space Coast Chapter, which serves Brevard, Flagler, and Volusia Counties.
“If you don’t have time to volunteer or donate financially, then just spread the word,” said Executive Director Janice Moran. “Social media is very powerful. Just follow us and click and share.”

Next, New Smyrna Beach Fire Department Chief Shawn VanDemark held a pinning ceremony for five of his department’s new recruits: Firefighter/EMT Cameron Coakley, Firefighter/EMT Nicholas D’Aurio, Firefighter/Paramedic Elijah Hrbek, Firefighter/Paramedic Christian Huddleston, and Firefighter/EMT Tod Ulrich.
“These firefighters are going to work 365 days a year. They are going to work Christmases, Thanksgivings, miss all those soccer games, miss all those things that go along with that. So not only is it a sacrifice for them as an individual employee, it’s a sacrifice for the family as well,” said VanDemark before inviting family members to come forward for the ceremony.
Finally, VanDemark went on to recognize Matt Howell of Lost Lagoon Wings & Grill for raising $27,500 during an Oct. 2 fundraiser in support of injured Firefighter Driver/Engineer Jeremy Macklefresh, who sustained a catastrophic head injury on Sept. 8 leaving him hospitalized and in rehabilitation.
“That was a huge one-day event. Really, really helped the family in many ways,” said VanDemark. “Beyond that, there’s websites out there that’re still supporting him to this day. CubbyStrong, if anyone wants to look at it, check out the story, understand what happened, and maybe, if possible, help the family out a little bit financially.”
