Public Safety Awards: Officers Honored for Service

Public Safety Officer Ryan Mowen was named Officer of the Year and Firefighter/EMT Pete Duffy was named Rookie of the Year, and many other awards were presented at the Shores Public Safety Awards on May 20. Mowen has been a Public Safety Officer since August 2018, and Duffy joined the department last July.

The awards program, wrapping up National Police Week, was the first held in several years due to the COVID pandemic. Other awards presented at the program were:

Administrative Excellence – Lt. R.J. Medders

Director’s Special Recognition – Sgt. Kathryn Gotz

Civilian of the Year – Kelley Register, Crime Scene Analyst

Meritorious Service – Sgt. Vincent Castellano and Officers Jacob Franklin and Heather Wooleyhan

Volunteer Awards – Richard “Ace” Beeman and Charles Hall

Lifesaving Awards – Four Lifesaving Awards were presented to individual officers or pairs of officers for actions that saved a person’s life. Recipients were Officer Laura Diedesch, Detective Sgt. Jessica Long, Officer Jack Ransom, Firefighter/Paramedic Jodie Stafford, Paramedic Matthew Sweeney and Officer Jeff Zephir

Teamwork Awards – Eight Teamwork Awards were given for officer teams who worked on a specific criminal case. Recipients of the Teamwork Awards were Firefighter/Paramedic Brad Blad, Evidence Technician Brian Bruggemann, Detective Daniel Carrazana, Detective Darius DeBarros (who has since died), Officer Laura Diedesch, Detective Jordan Duffy, Detective Sgt. Jessica Long, Detective Gary Malphurs, Lt. R.J. Medders, Officer Ryan Mowen, Sgt. Bill Phillips, Sgt. Richard Rademacher, Crime Scene Analyst Kelley Register, Officer Sean Rooney, Officer Zachary Rooney, Lt. Michael Schoenbrod, Officer Trevor Wyman and Officer Jeff Zephir

Community Involvement in presenting the Citizens Academy – Firefighter/Paramedic Bradley Blad, Evidence Technician Brian Brueggemann, Detective Daniel Carrazana, Sgt. Vincent Castellano, Detective Darius DeBarros (who has since died), Detective Jordan Duffy, Sgt. Kathryn Gotz, Commander Terry Griffiths, Fire Inspector Ernie Jarvis, Detective Sgt. Jessica Long, Detective Gary Malphurs, Lt. R.J. Medders, Records Clerk Elizabeth Ortman, Officer Michael Osborne, Sgt. Bill Phillips, Officers Sean Rooney, Zachary Rooney and Glen Schwarz, Lt. Certificates of Appreciation – Certificates were presented to Mayor Nancy Miller, Vice Mayor Mel Lindauer, Council Members Richard Bryan, Richard Frizalone and Michael Politis, City Manager Michael Booker and Assistant City Manager/Finance Director Kurt Swartzlander

Recognition of 20 years of service on the Southeast Volusia Regional SWAT team – Lt. Mike Schoenbrod, who retired from the SWAT team earlier this year
