City commissioners were joined by members of the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce and New Smyrna Museum of History to read proclamations recognizing the Chamber's 90th anniversary and May as Historic Preservation Month in the City of New Smyrna Beach.
Established in 1926 with over 2,000 members before being officially chartered in 1932, the Chamber is an active group of working professionals who promote business and economic development in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, and Oak Hill. Their headquarters, located in a historic building at 115 Canal St., was built in 1934 and renovated in 2010 with ECHO and Community Redevelopment Agency funding.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation established May as Historic Preservation Month in 1973 as a way to promote historic places for the purpose of instilling national and community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and showing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation.
"Historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability," said Vice Mayor & Zone 3 Commissioner Jason McGuirk. "The historic houses and buildings of New Smyrna Beach help make our city unique and provide links with aspirations and attainment of the city's pioneers and their descendants."
