Firefighters, Coast Guard Auxiliary honored at June 28 City Commission meeting

34

Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedics Chase Pierson and Elijah Hrbek for receiving Outstanding Community Service Awards from New Smyrna Lodge # 149 F. & A. M. during last night’s City Commission meeting.

On May 1, the two responded to an impending childbirth call where they were met in the front yard by the father stating the “first one” had just been delivered. Unbeknownst to the crew, they faced the imminent birth of twins approximately 20 miles from the mother’s hospital.

Along with a Volusia County Fire Rescue squad, Pierson and Hrbek immediately went to work securing the umbilical cord of the first child while preparing to deliver the second. Complicating matters, the second child had to be delivered in breech (feet first) presentation. However, within 15 minutes the second child was delivered and New Smyrna Beach’s two newest residents were safely transported to Halifax Medical Center.

Next, city commissioners were joined by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 4-8 District to read a proclamation honoring 50 years of operations in New Smyrna Beach.

“New Smyrna Coast Guard Auxiliary promoted recreational boating safety by conducting over 7,000 boating education classes, nearly 100,000 marine dealer and business visits, and conducted countless thousands of free vessel safety exams,” said Mayor Russ Owen. “Flotilla 4-8 is an amazing organization where individual members can train and qualify in many different areas. Their core foundation is teamwork and they continue to contribute to New Smyrna Beach in a positive way.”
