An Oklahoma man who is a person of interest in a quadruple murder in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, was arrested by Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety Tuesday morning, Oct. 18.
Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Officer Laura Diedesch was conducting traffic enforcement on South Atlantic Avenue (A1A) at 8:29 a.m. Tuesday when her patrol vehicle’s license plate reader alerted that a passing Toyota Tundra pickup truck had been reported stolen out of Oklahoma.
Diedesch called for backup and two other Daytona Beach Shores officers and a Beach Safety officer responded, and they stopped the vehicle near the Botefuhr Beach Approach in Daytona Beach Shores.
Driver Joseph L. Kennedy II, 67, of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Kennedy was listed as a missing person and, once Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Officers notified the Oklahoma agency, they were informed Kennedy was a person of interest in a quadruple homicide that occurred earlier this month.
Kennedy is being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond.
“Our officer did a great job in making an arrest without incident, and our department is pleased we were able to take the person of interest in this horrible crime off the streets,” Public Safety Director Michael Fowler. “Our detectives are working with investigators in Oklahoma as they continue their investigation.”
