TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Today, Governor Ron DeSantis took decisive action by issuing Executive Order 24-63, suspending City Commissioner for the City of Orlando, Regina Hill, in response to her recent indictment. The Executive Order was issued in accordance with the Florida Constitution and relevant Florida Statutes.
The suspension comes after Regina Hill was indicted in the Circuit Court of the Ninth Judicial Circuit in and for Orange County on several serious charges, including exploitation of elderly and disabled persons, fraudulent schemes, and mortgage fraud.
Governor DeSantis' actions align with Article IV, section 7(c) of the Florida Constitution, which allows for the suspension of elected municipal officers facing criminal indictments. Additionally, Section 112.51(1) and Section 112.51(2) of the Florida Statutes provide specific grounds for the Governor to suspend elected officials for various reasons, including malfeasance, neglect of duty, and indictment for felonies or misdemeanors.
The Executive Order serves as a temporary measure, with the office being filled by appointment for the duration of the suspension. The term of the suspension will not extend beyond the specified period, as outlined in the Florida Constitution and relevant statutes.
Regina Hill's suspension underscores the commitment to upholding the integrity of public office and ensuring accountability among elected officials. Governor DeSantis' Executive Order 24-63 reflects the seriousness of the charges against Commissioner Hill and the need to address them in accordance with the law.
