Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has highlighted investments aimed at strengthening the state's natural resources, including a commitment to signing $1.5 billion for Everglades restoration and water quality improvements. Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, "Florida’s environment plays an important role in our economy and the Florida way of life, and I am proud of the work we have done to conserve it."
In addition to the $1.5 billion for Everglades and water quality, Governor DeSantis announced the award of $60 million in alternative water supply funding for 12 projects. These projects are expected to make available more than 28 million gallons of potable water each day. The Alternative Water Supply Grants will support initiatives such as reclaimed water, aquifer recharge, and water conservation.
DEP Secretary Shawn Hamilton highlighted the collaborative nature of these projects, stating, "Planning for Florida’s future water needs necessitates a collaborative, balanced approach to ensure adequate water supplies for future generations."
Since 2019, Florida has invested $190 million in state funding to support the development of alternative water supplies, resulting in more than 90 projects that are anticipated to produce over 206 million gallons per day when fully operational. The Fiscal Year 2024-25 budget includes $55 million for the Alternative Water Supply Grant Program to assist communities in planning and implementing essential conservation, reuse, and other alternative water supply projects.
Among the projects receiving funding through the Alternative Water Supply Grant Program are a brackish groundwater treatment facility in Polk Regional Water Cooperative, the development of Peace River Reservoir No. 3 by the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority, a reclaimed water main extension in the City of Niceville, a stormwater project in the City of Oakland, and various indoor and outdoor water conservation projects in the St. Johns River and South Florida Water Management Districts.
These investments underscore Governor DeSantis's commitment to preserving Florida's natural resources and ensuring sustainable water management practices for future generations.
