On June 12, 2016, a shooter aligned with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant perpetrated an act of terrorism at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This attack targeted the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities, resulting in forty-nine fatalities and fifty-three injuries. At that time, it was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a directive to honor the victims and those affected by this tragedy. In a memorandum addressed to Brian Fienemann, Director of Real Estate Development and Management, Governor DeSantis stated: "As a mark of respect for the victims, their families, and the many affected by this tragedy, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, June 12, 2024."
The commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost and impacted by this event eight years ago.
