The City Commission kicked off last night’s Aug. 9 meeting by recognizing the New Smyrna Beach High School women’s volleyball team. They had an outstanding year, ultimately being ranked #1 in the nation after riding a regular season record of 24-1 to victory in the inaugural Florida High School Athletic Association beach volleyball state championship at Florida State University on May 7.
Next, Katheryn & Jody Swain were presented with the 2022 Donnadine Miller Memorial Historic Preservation Award for their residence at 216 Florida Ave. The award, created in 2002, is given annually to properties 50 years and older that promote pride in the city’s past and increase awareness and appreciation for buildings that contribute to the history and character of New Smyrna Beach.
In legislative highlights, commissioners:
• Approved seven special event applications
• Heard first readings of ordinances to limit chain link fences in front yards and allow multifamily apartments east of the Walmart at 3155 State Road 44; second readings and public hearings will be conducted Aug. 23
• Made multiple appointments to city’s the Community Enhancement Engagement Committee, Economic Development Task Force, Facilities Advisory Committee, and Planning & Zoning Board
