City of Daytona Beach Shores recently issued the following announcement.
The City of Daytona Beach Shores invites the public to view the start of demolition of the former Treasure Island resort at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28.
A celebratory event, with a champagne toast and remarks by Mayor Nancy Miller, will be held in the vacant lot at the southwest corner of South Atlantic Avenue and Park Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores. The address is 2024 S. Atlantic Ave. Parking will be available on the lot, which is across the street from the long-vacant Treasure Island building at 2025 S. Atlantic Ave.
Pece of Mind Environmental, an Orlando-based demolition and environment remediation company, has been hired by property owner 2025 South Atlantic Avenue LLC, a subsidiary of ACRES Capital, for the demolition project. Pece of Mind will use a large crane equipped with a claw arm to tear down the building.
A development agreement approved by the Daytona Beach Shores City Council in February requires the property owner to tear down the building by early June and gives the owner an additional 30 days to restore the property to a safe and aesthetic nature.
The city has worked for years on a solution for the eyesore and safety hazard the former Treasure Island has become. The resort was heavily damaged by hurricanes in 2004, and the building’s condition deteriorated over the years. The city began condemnation and that led to a Stipulated Settlement Agreement and redevelopment plan.
The development agreement provides the framework for future construction of a new hotel and/or multifamily residential development and parking garage on the Treasure Island property, neighboring Sunny Shores property and other smaller parcels in the vicinity.
