1

Daytona State College Athletics issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.

The Daytona State College men’s soccer team was honored to have four players make NJCAA All-American for the spring 2021 season.  The Falcons had the most players recognized in the NJCAA on the All-American Team with four, and each brought something unique to the Falcons this past season. Coach Sasnett

1st Team - Mohamed Oued/Bordj-Menaiel, Algeria

The 6’5” center back is committed to play at Palm Beach Atlantic University.  Head Coach Bart Sasnett on Ouaad, “Mohamed is very deserving of this award. His presence on the field is amazing. His strongest attributes include being a fierce headball winner, elite 1v1 defending, pro-level tactical awareness, great communicator, and displaying strong leadership qualities on and off the field.  It has been an absolute joy to coach Mo, and I hold him in the highest regard,” said Sasnett.

2nd Team - Santiago Fonseca/Toronto, Canada

Fonseca is committed to play for the University of North Florida.  Sasnett said about Santiago, “This guy is a big time playmaker with great vision and 1v1 ability.  Santi can beat you on the dribble, with speed, and with combining and changing the point of attack.  He reads the game and works very hard to be on the ball all the time.  It has been a pleasure to watch Santiago grow as a player and person.  I have no doubt he will have a great career at UNF and in the future.”

2nd Team - William Diaz/Sanford, Florida, USA

Diaz is a Freshman and will be returning to Daytona State College.  Diaz is a local product of growing up playing in the Orlando City MLS system.  In the second week of April, Diaz was recognized as the NJCAA National Goalkeeper of the week.  Coach Bart on Diaz, “Will is a born leader with exceptional work ethic.  His energy on the field is contagious.  His strongest attributes include excellent footwork, strong communication, shot blocking ability, and his competitive spirit”.  Diaz ended the year as one of the top statical goalkeepers in the country and only allowed three goals on the year.  In the classroom, he shines with a 3.95 GPA.  Daytona State College is lucky to have Diaz back for another season.

United Soccer Coaches 2nd Team All American

3rd Team - Curtez Kellman/Georgetown, Guyana

Curtez is a sophomore and will be returning to play at Daytona State College.  Coach Sasnett on Kellman, “Curtez Kellman is the ultimate team player. He makes soccer look easy and he is a two dimensional player.  Curtez is comfortable playing at center back and holding the midfield.  His strongest attributes include high soccer IQ, elite technical abilities, tactical awareness, and leadership.  Daytona State College is honored to have Curtez returning to play.

Not only was this the best year on the field for the Falcons, but it was the best year in the classroom with a team GPA of 3.3 overall.  This outstanding accomplishment places men’s soccer second for male athletics in the state of Florida and 15th nationally.  The Daytona Way is academic achievement 1st.  The men’s soccer team sets a high standard for success in the classroom and on the field.

The Daytona State men’s soccer team finished the season ranked 3rd nationally and won the southeast district championship.  The program competed in the NJCAA National Tournament and lost to Iowa Lakes 1-0 and 2-1 to Tyler Community College.
