Volleyball Keeps Rolling with 3-0 Sweep at Barry

3

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University recently issued the following announcement.

The Embry-Riddle volleyball team used a balanced attack and an efficient offense to make quick work of Barry on Tuesday night, breezing past the Bucs 25-20, 25-15, 25-15. The win moves ERAU to 13-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play, while Barry falls to 7-2 overall, 3-2 in SSC matches.

Jaden McBride led the Eagles with nine kills and eight digs, while Cameron Gilleland, Jenna Bishop, and Amelia Hartnett each chipped in with seven kills. Bishop hit .700 while Hartnett hit .429; as a team, the Blue and Gold hit a blistering .404 for the match. Emily Weaver tallied a team-high 20 assists while Devyn Petrowski notched 11 assists in ERAU's 6-2 offense.

After the two teams traded 3-0 runs to start the match, kills from Sam Lanning and McBride put the Eagles ahead, 5-3, which would prove to be a lead they would not surrender for the rest of the opening set. A 7-1 spurt increased the margin to 15-9, and a 4-0 rally late in the set created some much-needed separation at 22-16 after Barry had pulled within two (18-16). Gilleland put down kills for the final two Eagle points as ERAU took the set, 25-20.

Like the first set, both sides exchanged 4-0 runs to open the second frame. The Blue and Gold then rattled off six straight points to make it 10-4, and the Eagles never looked back. Back-to-back service aces from Weaver made it 19-10 and back-to-back aces from Petrowski closed the door on the set at 25-15.

Embry-Riddle took an early 4-1 lead in the third set, but it was a few points later that the Blue and Gold really stepped on the gas. Holding a 5-3 lead, ERAU got a kill from Bishop that sparked nine straight points, which eventually turned into a 13-2 run, pushing the lead to 18-5. The Bucs were barely able to get the lead down to single-digits at 24-15 before a block from Melanie Canfield and Trinity Gibson secured the set, 25-15, completing the 3-0 sweep.

The Eagles return to the court on Thursday, Sept. 30, when they visit No. 23 Nova Southeastern. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale.
