Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation that will provide additional resources to students in Florida by enabling schools to host chaplain programs and patriotic organizations on campus. The Governor emphasized the importance of faith leaders and civic organizations in supporting students, stating, “Faith leaders and civic organizations are important additional resources for students who may be facing challenges or need to build community and camaraderie.”
Representative Berny Jacques expressed his gratitude for the signing of HB 1317, highlighting the significance of allowing patriotic organizations in schools. He mentioned organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, emphasizing the positive impact they can have on students' lives.
Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. also praised the legislation, noting that volunteer chaplains offer valuable faith-based support to students and families across the state. He emphasized the importance of providing diverse resources to serve all students in Florida.
Representative Stan McClain commended Governor DeSantis for signing House Bill 931, which establishes a statewide school chaplain program. McClain highlighted the importance of addressing students' spiritual and emotional needs, stating, “We are selling our kids short if we only focus on meeting their intellectual needs but fail to make provision for their spiritual and emotional needs.”
The newly signed HB 931 authorizes school districts and charter schools to allow volunteer chaplains on campus to provide counseling support to students with parental consent. Additionally, HB 1317 authorizes districts to welcome civic and patriotic organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of the United States of America to encourage student participation and involvement.
With these legislative changes, Governor DeSantis and Florida aim to enhance the educational experience of students by providing them with a wider range of support and resources within the school environment.
