Men’s Soccer Drops SSC Match to Florida Tech

0

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.

A late surge by Florida Tech handed the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team its first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season by a final of 2-1 on Wednesday.

Scoring opportunities were scarce in the first half. Both squads combined for only three shots and two shots on goal. The Eagles' lone shot came in the final minutes of the period when Teddy West stood outside the penalty area and shot an accurate ball toward the net, but it was saved.

On the defensive side, Embry-Riddle fended off a couple of Panther corner kicks, including one that was punched away by the Eagles' keeper Jack Crichton as it curved into the box.

A wild play broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute. Noah Sims raced after a pass that rolled toward the endline on Florida Tech's defensive side. While colliding with a Panther, Sims tapped the ball and stopped its momentum inches before going out of bounds. The forward got back on his feet and sent a short pass to Teddy West in the center of the goal box. He nudged the ball toward the net, but it was blocked by Florida Tech's goaltender. The ball bounced off his legs and over to Amit Libgot, who sent it over the goal line for the first score of the match and his second of the season.

The Panthers came on strong in the final 10 minutes with two goals, the first of which was off a corner kick in the 83rd minute. Guillermo Segovia stood in the middle of the box a couple feet away from the goal. He watched the ball from Altair Reyes slice in, jumped up, and headed it in to tie the match.

Five minutes later, Florida Tech took the lead with under 90 seconds left in regulation. Juan Masqueda found open space on the right side and sent a high-speed shot into the back of the net for the winning goal.

Embry-Riddle was outshot 11 to four but only four to three in shots on goal. Teddy West led the team in both categories with two each. Jack Crichton received his third-consecutive start in goal and recorded a pair of saves.

Both teams will meet for a rematch on Oct. 5 in Daytona Beach.

The Eagles finally return home for the first time since their season-opening win against Southern Nazarene on Sept. 4. Embry-Riddle is scheduled to face Tampa on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
