Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), has revealed accelerated timelines for various infrastructure projects under the banner of "Moving Florida Forward." These initiatives, which include the widening of I-4 in Osceola and Polk counties and the Poinciana Parkway Connector Project in Osceola County, are now set to commence 10–20 years ahead of schedule.
Speaking on the prioritization of transportation over politics, Governor DeSantis affirmed, "Under my watch, Florida’s Department of Transportation will be solely focused on transporting people, unlike the federal government’s politicization of our national Department of Transportation." The Governor highlighted the significance of listening to the needs of Floridians and delivering tangible results.
FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E., praised Governor DeSantis for his forward-thinking approach, stating, "Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ bold vision, the Moving Florida Forward projects along I-4 will provide a tremendous number of improvements for nearly 200,000 travelers who have been anxiously waiting for congestion relief as commuter, tourist, and freight traffic grows in Central Florida." Perdue emphasized the importance of prioritizing infrastructure that enhances the quality of life for Floridians.
The I-4 Moving Florida Forward projects will involve widening 14.7 miles of the interstate in Osceola and Polk counties, introducing managed express lanes, expanding road shoulders for emergency evacuations, and reworking interchanges to alleviate congestion. Additionally, the Poinciana Parkway Connector project will address a critical 2.6-mile roadway in Osceola County, connecting key highways in the region.
Furthermore, the passage of House Bill 1301 signifies a commitment to infrastructure over ideology, ensuring that Florida's transportation priorities are enshrined in state law. The bill emphasizes reducing congestion, supporting the supply chain, promoting quality of life, and utilizing transportation funds efficiently. It also includes provisions to enhance public transit accountability, expand funding for rural communities, and invest in Florida's inland ports and logistics centers.
Governor DeSantis' proactive stance on infrastructure development and congestion relief initiatives showcases a dedication to meeting the evolving transportation needs of Florida's residents and visitors.
